In 1967, President Johnson appointed Thurgood Marshall, a NAACP lawyer to the Supreme Court. This landmark signified the first African American to be appointed to the Court, which would be the most important deal until President Reagan appoints Sandra Day O'Connor to the Court as the first woman to serve.
